Resources Classification
1.Definition
Resource is everything available in the environment (category) which can be used to satisfy our needs (detail 1), if it technologically accessible (detail 2), economically feasible (detail 3) and culturally acceptable (detail 4)
-
-
3. Exhaustibility
Renewable
Resources that cane be renewed by physical, chemical, mechanical processes
Solar & Wind energy, water (Continuous/Flow), forests, wildlife (Biological)
Nonrenewable
-
Minerals & fossil fuels Metals can be recycled, fossil fuels are non-recyclable
5. Status of Development
Potential
-
For eg: in Rajasthan & Gujarat there is enormous potential to develop wind & solar energy but has not been developed properly so far
Stock
Resources in the environment which have the potential to satisfy human needs but appropriate technology is not available to use them
Eg: Water is composed of two inflammable gases - O2 & H2 that can be used as a rich source of energy but we do not have the technology to use them
Reserve
-
It is a resource that can be used with the available technology but their use has not yet started and can be used in the future
Eg: River water can be used for generating hydroelectric power but it is being used only to a limited extent
Developed
Resources which have been surveyed and their quality & quantity have been determined for utilization
-
4. Ownership
Individual
-
Urban people own house, plot and other property
Other examples are pasture lands, ponds, water in wells under individual ownership

Eg: In villages- grazing grounds, burial grounds, village ponds. In urban areas - public parks, picnic spots, public playgrounds etc
