MGF Week 2: Trompenaars
-
GLOBE study
certain attribute distingusish one culture from another and can be used to predict the most suitable, effective and accetptable org and leadership practices
results showed how managers behaved and how different cultures can yield mangers with similar perspectives
extends and integrates Hofestede & Trompenaars, looks at 9 different cultural attirbutes of middle managers from 951 orgs in 62 countries
-
Analyse
although Trompaanars expansion on cutlural dimesnions is very useful for research, it can be very difficult to classify cultures as fully adhering to these dicotmous scales
while its great to know that they are different, Trompenaars dimensions fail to understand WHY the two cultures express such different value orientations. Int managers must understand the why behind the cultural dimensions as they are very different for each culture even if they both share the same orientation and this will affect how decisions are made, how people communicate and how mangers and workers interact.
Examples
-
Example, Norway vs Brazil, are almost exact opposites when it comes to Trompenaars
-
-
Neautral vs emotional
Brazilians tend to show emotion and value the emotional aspects of relationships much more highly than Norweigians. In addition, personal space is very low in Brazil and a Norwegian manager may feel very unconfortable when a Brazilian manager comes physically close to them, expresses their emotions and may touch them as well.
Northern European cultures are considered 'territorial' which implies they are more researved in regards to spatial proximity and the need for privacy. Norwegian and Brazilian managers could easily make each other feel unconfrortable as neutral and emotional including physical space and touch differences make up a large part of how people interact
specfic vs diffuse
In Norway business and home life tend to be kept seperate illustrting a prefecnce for specific cultures whereas in Brazil, they are more diffuse
-
sequential vs syncronous
Norway - sequential, view time as monocromatic as they make decisve plans and stick to them. Brazil is more syncronous with time seen as more fluid and decsions and plans can change very quickly. meetings may not always start on time and it's normal to be up to 30 mintues late
inner vs outter
outter or inner directed - this is where they are both most similar, both have tendecy to fall into the inner directed culture and belive that things are within their control.
