Identifying and Assisting Students
with Learning Difficulties:
During class, student is observed to
be struggling in some way.
Signs of struggling include:
Not progressing academically at the same rate as peers
Persistent disruptive behavior or misbehavior issues
Struggling to express themselves or understand teachers' language
Differentiate instruction to try to meet student's needs within the classroom.
Ask yourself: am I teaching to accommodate different learning styles?
Discuss work that isn't being completed/understood with student to try and identify problem.
Adjust deadline/timeline if necessary to allow for student to have more time to understand.
Continue to observe student in classroom, recording data and watching for patterns.
Communicate with student's other teachers to gather more data and a more complete picture of student's school life.
Together with other teachers, develop assessment strategy to address student's unique goals
Try and identify a pattern, rule out any other issues (e.g. language barrier) that could be affecting student's performance, isolate any variables that could be affecting student's performance.
Establish communication with parents
Ensure everyone at home knows what has been observed and what steps are will be taken next.
Student is referred to special education team.

Professionals I interviewed have social media type applications (e.g. ClassDojo) or use email to communicate freely with parents. This is viewed as less confrontational than in person or by phone.
Find a learning style that works for student: Student improves and
positive outcome is achieved!
No further intervention necessary!
e.g. Can students better understand concept if it's presented visually, kinesthetically, musically, etc. ?
