women's rights during confederation
women could not go to university
they could not become professionals
they could still go to school though
some decided to go to US to get degrees
society believed women weren't supposed to be involved in public life - they literally were just there for cooking, housekeeping, and raising children
couldn't participate in politics
no right to vote
no right to run for office
some kinda did though
Women's Christian Temperance Union
pressured government to ban the sale of alcohol
also pressured government to let women vote
Toronto Women's Literary Club
appeared to be a normal book club
secretly woman's suffrage (right to vote) organization
eventually stopped being secretive and renamed itself to Canadian Women's Suffrage Association
actively campaigned for support for women's right to vote
everybody made fun of it
but they still eventually won
often politely rejected
they organized charities, which were usually sponsored by churches
john a. macdonald supported giving unmarried women the right to vote
idk why, maybe he thought the husband would influence the wife's political opinions
really stupid reason though
lots of married women were involved in WCTU and TWLC/CWSA
after a woman got married, her rights disappeared
pressured into getting married
(not a lot of other economic options)
inheritance
being a teacher
not much else
basically viewed as property of husband
