Identifying and Helping Struggling Students in the Classroom: Presented as a Cycle
Paying Attention to a Student's Behavior in Class.
Speak with the homeroom teacher.
Speak to other specialty teachers.
Perhaps they notice the same behavior, or nothing out of the ordinary.
Perhaps they have noticed and have already implemented a strategy.
Speak to Administration
Do they already have knowledge of the student?
Are they currently communicating with the parents?
Do they have specific information that can help me differentiate?
Is there any documentation they want me to provide?
Is there any documentation they want me to begin collecting?
Is there anything they want me to communicate to the parents?
Formulate a Strategy
To what degree does the student need differentiation?
Does the student need modified instruction?
Does the student need modified tests?
Should the teacher use Access Points in their curriculum standards?
Does the student need more oral instruction/testing?
What do other teachers, administrators, and special education teachers recommend?
How can the parents be involved more?
Implement a Strategy
Return to the Beginning and Start Again
.
Are there environmental changes that will help the student?
What type of learner is the student?
Compare your knowledge with theirs.
Could it be that the student has little interest in the subject being taught?
Are there similarities across subjects?
Does the homeroom teacher have knowledge from the parents or admin that hasn't been passed on to specialty teachers?
Is there already an IEP in place?
Do they look lost, frustrated, or inattentive?
Do they usually hesitate to raise their hand?
Are they unable to answer simple/complex questions in class?
Does their homework regularly come back incomplete or not at all?
To they regularly forget items important to class?
Are they falling behind in class?
Use entry/exit slips to see how much they have retained from class to class or at the end of a class.
Are there environmental factors?
