US Govenment set up HUAC to investigate communist involvement in the government, many were sacked and started to blame and name others to take suspicion away from themselves

McCarthyism
Senator Joe McCarthy from Wisconsin started a campaign against possible communists and thousands found their lives and careers ruined by him. False accusations lead to people being blacklisted so they had no work
He even went as far as investigating libraries and any books suspected to be written by Communists were ordered to be destroyed
he received a mixed reception from the American people and those who supported him really hated communism
