Periodic table 5.2 & 5.3
Groups
There are 18 groups in the periodic table and each group has similar physical and chemical properties, the groups ago down
Group 1 Alkali metals
All Alkali metals:
- have typical metallic properties
- Form ions with a charge of +1
- Have similar chemical behaviour
- Are far to reactive to be found in their pure form, therefore found in compounds
-
Group 17 the Halogens
Atoms of halogens:
- form ions with a charge of -1
- are not found in nature in their pure form but found in a various types of salts
- get bigger and get less reactive as you move down the group
- all form molecules made up of two atoms
- have coloured and poisoned vapours
-
Transition metals
The transition metals (group 3-12) are all metals and contains elements like iron, gold, zinc, copper and silver
They all have similar properties e.g. all relatively hard, with high melting points
