SIMPICITY
STUDY SCRIPT AND THEMES
UNIVERSAL
Von Trier has said that "a film should be like a stone in your shoe". To create original art he feels that filmmakers must distinguish themselves stylistically from other films, often by placing restrictions on the film making process.
characters should have 4 or so key aspects
vulnerability and cunning- nicole kidman
Their obliviousness to what is taking place in the children's bedroom over at Vera and Chuck's house seems like a malign and active refusal to acknowledge it, a symbol of the repressive, willed innocence that is among the town's many sins. The people of Dogville are proud, hypocritical and never more dangerous than when they are convinced of the righteousness of their actions. Grace, as it happens, may not be much better.
at the end he judges others and himself— the playwright
'I think the point to the film is that evil can arise anywhere, as long as the situation is right.''
fuck capitalism
sentimental gangster— opposite of what u expect
civilization, which requires knowledge and organization, is more than the handling of necessities and simple doings—civilization is the result of choices that are willed into being
we do not need intelligence and sensitivity in the form of a film, a book, a painting, or a sonata—we desire it, we will it
beauty, that is the realm of civilization, and the more intricate the design the more complicated the civilization
Culture concerns what we do; but civilization, the realm of the aesthetic and the intellectual, is like morality, the realm of the good and the just, in that it is concerned with how and why.
fight club
tyler is everything character wants to — represents what he is not
HAVE A CHARACTER- that represents desires, repressed feeling
film/ book— shows what society lacks and what it is fighting against
split personality- creates confusion/ plot
against consumerism/ products/ selling yoursself ==== the new religion (no god or family)
onsumers deny themselves any deeper emotional or spiritual satisfaction—a vacuum that Tyler’s fight club (and then Project Mayhem) attempts to fill.
The novel suggests that modern society emasculates men by forcing them to live consumerist lives centered around shopping, clothing, and physical beauty. The novel further suggests that such traits are necessarily effeminate, and therefore that because American society prizes these things it represses the aspects of men that make men, men. In short, the novel depicts the men it portrays as being so emasculated they’ve forgotten what being a “real man” means.
masculinity is, above all, a physical state: an awareness of one’s body, and a willingness to use one’s body to satisfy deep, aggressive needs.
Ultimately, the novel comes to suggest that raw, unchecked masculinity can be just as if not more harmful than an emasculated, consumerist society.
“primal” aspects of masculinity—notably, aggression and violence—is too destructive,
believe that traditionally effeminate values and behaviors are destroying them—or, worse, that women themselves are the enemy
Marla (and her reciprocal feelings for the Narrator) suggest an alternative to pure, unfiltered masculinity, and therefore a critique of the characters’ misogyny.
While the members of fight club and Project Mayhem dismiss women and femininity altogether, toward the end of the book the Narrator goes to Marla for help while fighting Tyler and Project Mayhem. Perhaps, through the Narrator’s alliance with Marla, Palahniuk is trying to suggest that the answer to society’s problems (perceived effeminateness) isn’t to “swing back” in the opposite direction and be hyper-masculine, but to embrace some values that are stereotypically masculine (such as strength) and some that are more stereotypically feminine (such as compassion)—values that in fact aren’t masculine or feminine, but simply human.
————
they consider death and pain to be more “real” than the lives they lead outside the fight club. But how does the novel define the “real?”
to exist “in the moment”—they want to feel pain in order to move closer to a visceral, physical world that they cannot access in the course of their ordinary lives.
ends them on dangerous missions—to feel pain, to experience fear and danger, and in so doing to feel the thrill of life.
A major contradiction in the fight club is that to be truly “successful” in experiencing death and embracing life, you would actually have to die—in which case you’d never get to embrace “real” life at all.
Overall, the novel leaves it unclear if Tyler and the Narrator’s experiments with pain and death actually provide real meaning and fulfillment or just a kind of selfish, thrill-seeking illusion of meaning that ultimately leads to destruction.

That laughter comes courtesy of a superfluity of withering zingers: “Was that an announcement or a cry for help?”; “You’re a first-class lesbian and a second-rate thinker”; “Tickle an aromatherapist and you find a fascist” – the quotable one-liners come thick and fast. But beneath the surface there’s something more substantial, an unexpected poignancy at play as diehard rationalist Bill wrestles with metaphysical matters, while Janet rhetorically asks: “Why didn’t I notice?”
Kristin Scott Thomas as Janet, an idealist, and Timothy Spall as Bill, a materialist
Patricia Clarkson as April, a cynic and realist, and Bruno Ganz as Gottfried, a pseudo-scientific healer

1) When speaking to an actor off-camera, look into one eye and stick with it.
2) Film acting is, in large part, reacting and listening.
3) While rehearsing something with a fellow actor, if a crew member can come up and recognize you’re rehearsing vs. having a real conversation, then you aren’t doing it right.
4) An actor relaxes in front of the camera by concentrating, and knowing that you have no enemies on set, everyone’s on your side and doing their best to make you look your best for the movie.
5) The camera catches everything you do, so don’t be afraid to play things subtley.
6) If you’re going to smoke on-screen, you must plan it absolutely perfectly, don’t mess up the continuity.
7) All actors steal certain gestures and behaviors from other actors -- but the best actors make these gestures their own. Steal from the best, and make it your own.
8) You can make four pictures as an actor in the time it takes a director to make one -- so if you’re an actor planning on becoming a director, consider the financial aspect.
9) A majority of movie acting is relaxation. If you’re knocking yourself out, you’re doing it wrong.
10) Theater acting is an operation with a scalpel, movie acting is an operation with a laser.
