Paint Analysis
Components of Paint
Binders- polymeric resins e.g. acrylics, polyurethanes, alkyds
Provides adhesion- alkyds, acrylics (polyesters)
-
Additives- fillers, extenders, dispersants
Extenders- reduce the cost, thickness and provides the bulk. e.g. calcium carbonate, talc, kaolinite, barium sulphate.
-
Paint Layer System
Clearcoat- clear varnish to protect the base coat. UV resistance, oxidative resistance, durability
-
Surfacer- to provide a hiding effect, full colour, provides a smooth base.
Primer- to adhere to the substrate, used to prepare
Analysis of Paint
-
-
Layer sequence and appearance, organic binder chemical composition, inorganic pigment elemental composition
Classification Systems
End use of the paint- e.g. automotive, architectural, marine, industrial, specialty coatings
Binder composition of the paint: e.g. acrylics, alkyds, epoxies, urethanes
Appearance/texture of the paint: e.g. matte, gloss, colour;./

-
SEM/EDX
Provides the inorganic elemental composition of pigments and additives used in paint systems. When combined with the organic information descriminating between paint systems is enhanced.
-
What is Paint?
Consists of a pigment dispersed in a resinous binder, which is reduced to a desired viscosity with a solvent
-
-
FTIR
Provides molecular structure, non-destructive, paint analysis - polymers.
Py-GC/MS
Solid is burnt at a very high temp and vapours produced are placed onto a column. Pyrogram. Polymers unsuitable- due to lack of volatility. At high temp polymer unzips to give smaller more volatile molecular fragments.
