  1. The Symphony arrives St. Debora where they performed 2 years ago, leaving Charlie and the sixth guitar behind. They were informed to set up by Walmart by a small boy. They enter the town playing music but no one came to see. They decide to perform A Midsummer Dream . Kristine has to play a couple with Sayid whom she broke up with. Themes

Civilization

The definition for civilization online is "the process by which a society or place reaches an advanced stage of social development and organization." In compare, the society after the epidemic is rather clusters of small societies than civilizations.

Art

Art symbolizes the continuation of civilization after the epidemic. The old society is gone and the the technological advances are gone, leaving the world fragmented. Along with this, books and other forms of continuation of knowledge is gone, but plays remained, being passed from one to another by act. One obvious symbol is King Lear being the key theme of both the first and second section of the book.

Symbols

Books

interconection

All the characters in the book are linked together through one or another way before the epidemic, but not anymore after the collapse of civilization. Interconnectedness is an important part of a developed society. Reminds me on the one research that says there is no person that you don't know after going through six? (don't know how to explain this but basically someone you know must know someone that knows someone...that knows the person you want to know after going through six people.)

Symbolization of knowledge, a way in which knowledge continued to be remembered after the collapse of civilization. The pursuit of knowledge shown through characters seeking to collect them?

Priest

Has a dog named Luli

Summary by Section of book

Pursuit of better life (Death and survival)

Survival is not enough and somewhat meaningless without a purpose and without thriving to reach for a better life. The seek for a better life seems to always been what drives civilization forward--it can date all the way back to when people first started to cultivate plants and build shelters. The formation and the reformation of civilization are somewhat similar.

Time

The story jumps back and forth on the timeline, showing the links between current events

Jumps back to Arthur's story over how he met his first wife. following what was mentioned in chp. 13, Miranda and Arthur meet and part with her admiring him doing what he loves. Arthur's "business" begins to grow better after meeting Miranda, and he becomes famous while more lonely. Seven years later he returns to Toronto and calls up Miranda again

Miranda works at a shipping company and supports her boyfriend Pablo while working on novel Station Eleven. She was in a fight with her boyfriend when Arthur called and they went on a dinner date. Miranda and her boyfriend break up and starts dating Arthur. Three years later they are celebrating their anniversary. Miranda feels like an outsider not used to the life they were living. When asked, she says that she has no intention to publish Station Eleven. She takes her dog outside and watch Arthur tell the story of them meeting. She feels that Arthur is having an affair with Arthur and confirms.

Clark gives Miranda a paperweight to comfort her. Elizabeth passes out drunk on the couch as Miranda realizes that her marriage is over. She leaves for a walk opening up to a paparazzi named Jeevan. Elizabeth came to Miranda's workshop to discuss the affair, half a year later they divorce. Miranda rejoins the shipping company and remains single, while Elizabeth moves in with Arthur.

Two experts of interview of Kristen by Francisco Diallo in year fifteen to collect stories after the collapse.

  1. Kristen questions whether Diallo has seen any othe copies of Station Eleven as he was a librarian before.
  2. Question about why Kristen became an actress--found by the Symphony after her brother's death. She remembers little from before. Discuss the danger of the world--cults, small towns, etc.

1 year before the flu began, Arthur is having dinner with Clark, and gives Clark the impression of performing. Arthur, now has a son with Elizabeth who is moving to Israel with her, and getting divorced with his third wife.

Jumps back to the Symphony. Kristien and some other discuss "survival is insufficient", and think that it is the best line ever written in a TV show. They walk the streets of old cities. They found a girl following them , Eleanor, 12 years old, was engaged to the prophet who already had 4 wives and had dreams of god. She reveals that Charlie and Jeremy left for the museum of civilization.

How the priest came to power--told by Eleanor. Grew up at the museum of civilization and traveled through the violent Virginia with a band of 19 men. Lived at Walmart at first but revealed his wild hopes after the mayor died of flu and married the mayor's wife.
They find a burnt down town two days afterwards,When looking for supplies, a skeleton with a bullet hole in the forehead was found but nothing else.
Dieter whispers telling Kristen about a dream of airplanes which Kristen barely remember.

August ad Kristen stand guard while Dieter and Sayid go scouting at night. August and Kristen feel like they were being watched, went to find Dieter and Sayid finding they disappeared. The group debates over what to do and search the area. The Symphony decides to continue their journey to the museum as they have a protocol where they travel with a destination and always meet up in the end. Kristen tells August that she thinks the two were taken by someone and mentions here thoughts over the prophet's idea of light and dark.

Interviews:

  1. About knife tattoo on Kristen's wrist, she refuses to explain why she had it as it was n=too painful.

The clarinet disappears as well. leaving a note that was possibly a suicide note. August and Kristen split off, At a golf corse, Kristen and August find fish which they caught and brought back, only finding that the symphony has already left. They decide to eat the fish alone.
Afterwards, they found a men who has ran away from the town with is family as the prophet rose to power and now lived.
They find a house where they search for the stuff they always do

Back to 7 years before the flu. Jeevan interviews Arthur. Arthur does not recognize that Jeevan took the picture of Miranda, and takes a liking in Jeevan and tells him a story that he is supposed to tell 24 hours after the interview-- that he will divorce Elizabeth and they will raise the kid together. Arthur thinks that nothing bad has happened to Elizabeth, and wants Jeevan to push him into telling her this by publishing the story.
8 days after Arthur's death, Jeevan tries to recall what happened next during the interview in his brother's couch. Cells have stopped working at this time.

Kristen searches for the book called dear V, which she has misplaced years before. It contains letters written by Arthur showing how he found Clark less interesting, and how he grew away from Miranda towards Elizabeth.

Letters from Arthur to Victoria:

  1. As young man in Toronto
  2. Marrying Miranda
  3. Falling in love with Elizabeth
  4. Dinner with Clark and Elizabeth and the awkwardness

Jump back before the flu--Elizabeth calling Clark to meet over the book Dear V. about to be published. Clark realizes through an interview he did over his boss, that he was like a sleepwalker (as the employee describes her boss) or a zombie (someone sunken into the world of phones), not thriving in life but only walking through it.

Arthur did keep the promise--which is one of the things he was proud of, and tells his brother how he tricked Miranda into the photo of her holding a cigaret.
The tv keeps broadcasting bad news, the highways are clogged with abandoned cars. They covered the windows so that no one knows that they were in there. Frank starts working on his final piece. Tv is gone, then internet, and water on day thirty. They fill everything they could with water before it stops. Jeevan daydreams that they will be able to leave once the situation gets better and red cross shows up while Franks believes that it never will.

On day forty, they see a fire, and start hearing gunshots outside. Death seems to leak into the room no matter how much duck tape they put on the door. After not hearing anything in the apartment building for a week, Jeevan decided to check outside. He wants to take his brother and leave but knows that it would be hard with his brother's wheelchair. Frank discusses the idea of war and survival, and gives the hint that he will commit suicide or something alike to not pull Jeevan back.

Excerpt from interview:

On day fifty eight, Frank reads Jeevan an excerpt that he has been working on over a philanthropist, and expresses the idea that one becomes immortal through being remembered.
Jeevan is traveling along the Great Lake south, Frank might have killed himself, but we are uncertain. Jeevan checked to make sure that Frank was not breathing before leaving. Jeevan traveled with a hiking bag and is frightened when hearing gunshots.

Death, Immortality

This idea was touched on by Frank when he mentions that one can become immortal through being remembered. Dying physically may not be the only death that one experiences. Reminds me of the quote by Eagleman "“There are three deaths. The first is when the body ceases to function. The second is when the body is consigned to the grave. The third is that moment, sometime in the future, when your name is spoken for the last time.”

  1. Asks Kristen about what she remembers from the night of the flu outbreak--Arthur's death. She asks Francisco whether he remembers the obituary of Arthur. Fransisco wonders if anyone does.
  1. Kristen asks Francisco if he still had the excerpt of the obituary, which he does. The obituary does not mention Jeevan's name. Kristen continues her story of how Jeevan helped her and how the woman (Tanya) gave her the paperweight that she still carries.
  1. Story of Kristen's last day in Toronto. She was watching TV when being told by her brother that they had to leave. They took the neighbor's car at first but got stuck in the flow of abandoned cars and had to go by foot instead. They traveled by the great lake and came to the United States.

Memory/Comparison

  1. Kristen remembers little from when being on the road--the first year after the flu. She believes that those who remember more from the old world suffer more as they understand what they have lost. She barely remembers anything from before the apocalypse. Fragmented memories of her parents and looking out of a plane. During this part she questions Francisco over whether fridges did have a light in them.

Back to year twenty. Kristen and August leave the house and discuss the magazines they found and the idea of parallel universes. The discussion of parallel universes seems to be an escape from the current events, where they imagine how it would be like if the apocalypse did not happen and how their life would be otherwise (how life would be overall). They also go over the excerpt in one of the magazines mentioning Miranda traveling to Toronto. Kristen recalls being in the building around the same time. The conversation turns to Dieter and Sayid as they were close to the city. They camp in the back of an abandoned house as August thinks that the scar of Finn's face was from the prophet and realizesthat it is a plane.

Jumps back to Miranda traveling to Toronto. Strong contrast between her current status--higher status much wealthier. She returned to see Arthur because his father passed and she knew where he was from. They met in the theatre as a restaurant would be too public, and the picture Kristen saw was taken. Miranda expresses her sadness for his loss and the topic turns to the publication of Dear V., which he wanted her to agree to. Miranda can't tell whether Arthur was acting and wonders if this line blurs for all actors. Topic turns back to their life as little Kristen enters.

Through Arthur and Kristen's interaction she sees how much Arthur misses his son who lived in Israel with his ex. Since Kristen was carrying a color book, the conversation turns to whether Miranda was still drawing. She was then reminded to give Arthur two of the first copies of Dr. Eleven. The conversation ends with Miranda telling him that she has to leave for Asia in four days. After leaving, she realizes that she forgot to give Arthur the paperweight and has it shipped to him.

Elizabeth is at a beach unaware of what is happening as Clark calls to inform her of Arthur's death. The Lawyer calls Clark arguing that Arthur may have wanted to wish what he had to Tanya on his last days--Clark is not interested. He calls Elizabeth to tell her about the news and that the funeral will be in Toronto. Which reminds him of a conversation over why Arthur liked Toronto--it was the only place where he was free. Clark boards a plane to Severn city airport, on which he met Elizabeth and her son. They were lucky and not infected by the disease.

Miranda thinks about Arthur for a while on the beach and returns to the hotel feeling slightly ill. She tries to distract herself through working on station eleven. She learns about the flu and found herself sick. The hotel staff have fled and she travels to the beach, weak, hoping to find someone to help. As she gets there, she was just in time to watch the sunrise and dies on the beach, sinking into the world of station eleven.

Back to year 20, at the airport. Clark thinks over how lucky he was to survive. The airport has grown into a colony and he has lived here since day one. He owned the museum of civilization and taught youngsters how planes used to work and about technology. The airport is now filled by newborns from after the apocalypse.

Jump back to when they heard the news on the flight not understanding what was happening. The plane has landed at Severn city, which Clark has never heard of. The airline staff did not know what to do. Clark reads Arthur's obituary, wondering where his boyfriend was. A teenager asks Arthur for an antidepressant that he has ran out of. A girl is sick and needs medication

Runs through events
Day 2: people recognize Elizabet and Tyler and complain about phones running out.
Day 3: All the vending machines are out and the girl gets more sick. A group was send out to find supplies, not finding what the girl needed. A man breaks into a restaurant and leaves his credit card, it remains untouched 97 days. They still have hope that a plane passes by.
Day 5: break into giftshop
Day 7: TV channels going off, electricity stops (now comes from generator at airport).
Day 8: someone hunts a deer that they eat. The sick girl leaves, leaving behind all her stuff. Arthur's sun keeps reading the comic book, his mom prays.
Day 12: power goes off completely, so does water.

Clark shaves often in order to maintain sanity and Elizabeth believes that the apocalypse will only be temporary. Clark has started the museum of civilization (obviously loosing hope in order being restored).
Day 100: The scout group goes out and returns meeting no one, but a day later a stranger arrives.
15 years after the apocalypse: the population at the airport increased largely and Clark can now focus on the museum. People come over to reflect at night. Elizabeth and Tyler have left in year two, leaving their passports for the museum. Tyler came to the idea that the apocalypse happened for a reason which Elizabeth agreed to and they left with a religious group. Clark meets someone with the paper with Elizabeth's interview in the fall and is shocked reading about Arthur.

Memories of the past make it harder to survive, as it gives people rootless hope and make people more miserable when comparing events.

Year 19: Clark and Garrett talk about his old boss and Garrett's last phone call that was to his boss, not family. Clark now spends more time in his memories, half asleep in dreams. Jeremy, Charlie, and Annabel arrive. Clark realizes that the Prophet is Tyler grown up. Shocked.

Francisco asking:

  1. Kristen: how she felt about the change--killing--the two knife tattoos represent her kills. --never had to hurt anyone else before.
Kristen does not remember from before which makes things easier, she does not remember where she got the scar. her brother died of infection. Francisco asks why she does not want this part recorded--she understands permanent records from Arthur's stuff.
  2. All those in the symphony A. survived alone B. don't remember from before

Jeevan:
he started living in a town called Mckinley and married one of the founders. His wife him and a friend are discussing whether to teach about the past in the local school. Jeevan is the local "doctor" and has just set a bone and is not paying attention to the conversation. Edward arrives on a horse with his wife who was shot by the prophet's men as she refused to became one of the men's wife. Jeevan thinks of Toronto and Arthur.

August and Kristen continue their journey after Kristen had a nightmare. Running into Sayid who is followed by three people lead by the prophet. They kill them to save Sayid as Sayid explains that they were following them for the girl Eleanor. They were taken, Dieter died and the other two lived.
The note that the clarinet left was the beginning of the play she wrote. She was taken and woke up seeing Sayid arguing with the prophet. Sayid mouthed her a plan to escape. The boy that was with the prophet feels that what they do is wrong but there was nothing he could do. Sayid distracted him so that the clarinet could escape and tell the symphony to leave.

The symphony had to leave without Kristen and August thus. Kristen's kills--1st year in symphony and two years after.
The prophet got to Kristen and the others and tries to kill them, quoting out of Station eleven as pointing a gun at Kristen, Kristen continues the sentence but the prophet says it's too late. The boy shot the prophet and they killed the rest while the boy killed himself. They find a page of station eleven in the prophet's bible and run into the symphony's scouts.

They arrive at the airport, meeting friends and discussing the events. Clark and Kristen recognize each other. Clark shows Kristen a town with electricity further away. Kristen and clark look at it, the others at the airport are enjoying time together; the symphony is on the way to arrive; jeevan and his family have food.

Jump back to Arthur's last day--decides that he will move to Israel to see his son every day. He gets to the old coffee where he used to meet Miranda and misses her. He later shows Station Eleven to Tanya which she recognizes, he also gives her the paperweight. The last things he remember is saying his last line wrong on stage and Jeevan standing up in the audience.

In station eleven, doctor eleven meets his mentor's ghost. Doctor eleven asks how death feels like and was answered it was like waking up from a dream. Miranda spent a lot of time writing this and flashes back before her death.

The symphony leaves after five weeks at the airport. Kristen leaves a book of Station Eleven for the museum. Clark reads and recognizes the dinner party scene and wonders what Miranda has been through. He looks at the planes and wonders if there are planes out there as their was electricity. Also wonders about how it is in other countries.
