Analysis Paragraph #1
Topic Sentence
Coates’ article follows the Charlottesville riots, an egregious display of dangerous white nationalism that, according to Carl Skutsch in his article “The History of White Supremacy in America,” mirrored that of the Nazi ideology
-
Evidence
In particular, the fact that they “shouted ‘Blood and Soil,’ imitating the Nazi slogan ‘Blut and Boden’ – meaning that the blood must be racially pure and the land must belong to the racially pure…” (Skutsch)
-
Analysis
...worsens and darkens the event further. Coates utilizes the horrific event to his benefit, however, aligning Trump with the white nationalist ideologies
-
Conclusion
This results in his audience in being forced to compare the two, as well as causing those earlier negative feelings to be tied with Trump’s image and name.
Conclusion is an obvious summary of analysis points, but needs work still.
Analysis
Because of the small gap between the Charlottesville riots and this article, this statement is registered by his audience as a character trait, or at least an expectation. This is extremely powerful given the wide public response – denouncement of such dangerous extremism – and creates negative feelings within in his audience, from disgust to fear.
Analysis goes into detail about how this affects Coates' audience, as well as why he chose his reference.
Analysis
By pointing out Trump’s response to the riots, as well as a Klansmen’s – albeit former Klansmen – opinion of Trump, Coates adjusts the association further between Trump and the extremist group, subsequently coloring Trump’s ideologies and tendencies to align with those who are white nationalists.
-
Evidence
when he references the time period of the “marauding Klansmen organized against alleged rapes and other outrages.” (Coates)
-
Evidence
This response is further strengthened when Coates references Trump’s reluctance to “denounce the Ku Klux Klan and David Duke, one of its former grand wizards” (Coates), as well as how “Duke in turn praised Trump’s contentious claim that “both sides” were responsible for the violence.” (Coates)
