COST OF DISCIPLESHIP
ETHICS AS ACTION
Influence of Karl Barth: Christianity's meaning doesn't lie in abstract though- NOT physical things. Its God who chooses to reveal Himself to humans, always a special act.
Bonhoeffer: Barth goes far enough, we should be careful not to accept limited role of passive recipients of revelation. We must 'do' as well as 'hear' the law, e.g. Pharisees listened to commands BUT didn't act on God's behalf & in Luke Martha acts but fails to listen to J' teaching.
Conscience: experience of disunity in the self- it prompts action. Ethics is action. Action is liberating.
COSTLY GRACE
Authentic Christianity must be based on: Christ, scripture & faith.
Religion as an institution is a human invention, like politics.
Therefore, church & state must be separate to avoid Church being politically manipulated.
'Cheap grace', e.g. rituals, cannot win God's grace. Rather grace is 'costly'.

SACRIFICE & SUFFERING
-
God, too, suffers in Jesus, acting in solidarity w/ humankind.
Passion of JC: sufferings leading up to & including death link to call of discipleship. J died without admiration or honour.
SOLIDARITY
-
Public rejected claim- punishment of Jews was God's work for their rejection of Christ. B: 'godless violence'.
-
Living 'Christian life', isn't to 'become religious' but to be there for other people.
