JESUS CHRIST
SON OF GOD
MIRACLES

Signs of salvation: world restored. E.g. healing man born blind (John 9:1-41) focuses more on J as bringer of salvation than mans sight being restored.
Salvation applies whole nature- e.g. walking on water- reminiscent of God's spirit hovering over chaotic water @ Creation story.
DON'T NECESSARILY INDICATE JESUS' DIVINITY: no word of 'miracle' in NT but rather 'might works', 'signs' etc. Low Christology- understood as parables. Some- they act as special insights into Jesus' teaching on nature of God's Kingdom.
CHRISTOLOGY
-
From below/low christology: Jesus' message, teachings. Salvation focuses people respond & helps develop relationships w/ God.
RESURRECTION
Experienced by many over a long period of time. J' resurrection marked beginning of new era as early followers experienced a change I'm their relationship w/ God.
St Paul: resurrection was the 'first fruits', everything can be brought into completion by God.
Wolfhart Pannenberg: Jesus ordinary human in his lifetime BUT resurrection decisive moment in history, a unique sign of God's accomplishment of creation at the end of days.
Anointed by God- Messiah. Anointed person would deliver Israel politically, morally & spiritual. Hebrew for annointed- Messiah. Greek for annointed- Christos.
-
KNOWLEDGE OF GOD
Jesus- fully human, how can he claim he knew he was God's son?
'I am the way and the truth, and the life'.
-
'Whoever has seen me has seen the Father' (John 14:9). Does this indicate Jesus was fully of conscious of God's will???
-
TEACHER OF WISDOM
AFFIRMATION OF LIFE
Wittgenstein: JC affirmed authentic living- unadorned & simple. J embodies moral & spiritual, was 'living word' not some abstract being.
MORAL TEACHING
MOTIVE & INNER PURITY
Sermon on the Mount: e.g. checking anger so not committing murder. Character traits might effect good moral actions or bad ones.
Morality about developing one's character, must analyse your motive.
-
PERSONAL REPONSIBILITY
-
J argued people misused Sabbath rules to avoid social responsibility. In focussing on this religious duty people were avoiding their duty to humanity
J broke them by healing sick & allowing disciples- pick corn. Morality isn't blind obedience, requires personal repsonsibility
Sermon on the Mount: 'I have not come to abolish but fulfil'- ambiguous: Torah not being practiced OR Torah replaced????
Taught teachings, parables, healing etc.
FORGIVENESS & REPENTANCE
-
-
E.g. Parable of Lost Son: son left home, abused all money, comes home & given great feast. Once was lost & was found. He went away from God & has been welcomed back by- father. Shows God will forgive. 'The son of mine was dead...come back to life'.
E.g. Zacchaeus (tax collector): message- people can change & be welcomed in God's Kingdom even if their a sinner.
IS JESUS JUST A TOW?
YES
-
FRY: humanity, no God BUT God incarnate (in flesh).
-
NO
More than that, e.g. SOG, Miracle maker etc. Evidence- e.g. parables, incarnation etc.
OTHER TEACHERS OF WISDOM: The BUDDHA, MUHAMMAD, MOSES, LAOZI & VIVEKANANDA.
UNIQUENESS
The Christ Event
There isn't 1 defining movement that makes Christ significant. BUT all the events, e.g. resurrection, death, miracles etc. Significance lies in the whole of his life & his relationship w/ history before & after.
John Macquarrie:Jesus' life no diff, every life unique 'unique is not helpful in answering this question'.There's no single event that marks Jesus as God's son. Its Jesus' place in history- makes him sig.
Whereas, Dannenberg argues there is 1 moment- resurrection that proves Jesus is God's son.
History & Faith
E.P.Sanders: Jesus' uniqueness can't be verified through historical claims alone, Jesus can be seen as great BUT not unique. He was substantially diff for the time, e.g. miracles, teachings, hope, non-violence etc but not enough- unique. History & faith- separate categories.
LIBERATOR
POOR
GUSTAVO GUTIERREZ
Jesus' mission wasn't just to save Israel BUT all human societies 'liberation which Jesus offers as universal'. Jesus' historical example as 'preferential option for the poor' sets the expectation-modern X's. Jesus was more than a zealot, he didn't ask to be set up like a national leader.
