What?
Competencies of one's ability to recognise, understand & manage their own emotions and those they interact with
Trait theory: effective leaders have unique traits- intelligence, determination, vision
Behavioural&contingency, simple possession insufficient
Why?
IQ does not predict effective leadership & organisational success
Difficulties with identifying those with potential to become leaders within organisations
Upper rank of organisations, technical competencies are of lower importance
Empirical evidence: +ve relationship between intelligence & leader/organisational performance
EI can be learned , managers can be trained through structured long term training programs
