Invasive Clostridium-- Clostridium perfringens
Disease
Gas Gangrene--clostridium infection that produces gas in tissues
Morphology
Gram positive rod
Properties/Virulence Factors
Obligate anaerobe
Spore formers
Invasive
"Loaded w/ ases"
Infection Method
1) Inoculation of spores in open wound
Can have facultative anaerobe (i.e. Staph aureus) use up all the O2 and make environment anaerobic
Does NOT have to be anaerobic to begin with
2) Once anaerobic, the vegetative cell releases toxins & destroys tissue & bacteria spreads
Diagnosis
Will know where the infection is (unlike Tetanus)
Fast-moving
Smelly bc of by-product
Ugly
Treatment
Lots of antibiotics specific for anaerobes
Amputation
Open up wound and aerate it--spores are harmless
Prevention
No human vaccine
