User Evaluations: 3-5 years
Consistency and Standards
“You don’t know if materials will download or load in a new tab, which is troublesome. I prefer it all to be in tabs rather than going between tab and downloads.”
Some materials opening in new tabs at times while others need to be downloaded
Navigation Links
Names of links a different depending on unit
Organisation of links are also different depending on unit
"Things shouldn't be different. If my assessment is here, I expect it's gonna be the same across the other subjects"
"Subjects have different ways of laying out navigation depending on the unit coordinator"
"Some subjects order or navigation is different. Maybe follow a structure for the default links, and add extra links at the bottom?"
"Not easy - only because i’m familiar with it that’s why i can navigate it"
Submitting Assessment:
“One subject has its own link, then others have folders and folders, you really have to find them and when you have four units, it shouldn’t be that difficult to find.”
"I rather it be consistent - that way everyone knows that this is the only way to submit the assignment
"It would be easy to jump from one submit to another rather than starting again."
Terminology is straightforward, but confusing when links are renamed in different units
"One subject has link that says MyGrades, the other subject has a different name."
One student found the MyGrades link was removed, when it had been there before
"Biggest inconsistency is when the MyGrades link wasn't there at all."
Layout / Organisation
Learning Resources: Weekly Table vs Folders
“I actually like the table because you get an overview of where you’re at in the semester.”
Assessment Folders:
"pretty consistent, placing of documents are in order"
Readings are in different locations
"Accessing grades was straightforward, but different steps for each unit"
Reading Materials were straightforward to locate.
Some participants stated it could be better organised
"I wish readings were segmented into relevant weeks instead of a full list.
"I don’t love how organisation from subject to subject is different. It's not consistent with layout & organisation skills"
"Each unit coordinator has their own way to set up something Blackboard."
Announcements
aren't in order of lastly updated
Students preferred viewing announcements via Unit Page rather than Announcements shortcut
Students found announcement shortcut handy, but disliked the organisation
"All the announcements are combined rather tt's easier to keep subject by subject."
"Doesn't feel right to use"
Flexibility and Efficiency of use
I like to go back to homepage to find units - because the drop down bar for units is weird"
Submitting Assessment
"Unit one was easier because they already had a link in the sidebar vs submission link within folders"
"Own separate link vs folder - you really have to find them and when you have 4 units it shouldn't be that difficult to locate a submission link"
"First, I was not sure where to go for each submit since they all structure it differently. I'd have to remember it."
“This quick link makes it easy to submit”
Contacting staff page uses an image file to display contact, can't copy and paste address
Student Suggestion: I'd like to see a contact form, so I can conveniently contact staff on the unit page without having to find email."
Login credentials are usually saved on students personal computer
Blackboard is bookmarked or auto fill address when student searches for it in URL
"When logging in via different devices, login in is usually frustrating because I always get my password wrong."
"Blackboard is straightforward to use, it does its job but could be better"
Recognition rather than Recall
"I spent a lot of time figuring it out at first, getting use to different layouts, relearn and adapt to different unit layouts, otherwise I'd ask someone"
Relearn: Changes happen again as a new semester begins
"You don’t know where things are, so you end up spending quite a bit of time to find stuff."
"First, I was not sure where to go for each submit since they all structure it differently. I'd have to remember it."
"I remember seeing previously but cant find in the same place for other units."
Help and Documentation
Submission
: "Different processes to submit assignment for each unit, so you really have to check before submitting."
A student noted: "Whether via Turnitin or Blackboard submission, it usually doesn't tell you whether you can submit a draft. So you have to find out."
Students were able to find help and locate contacts us page, but were frustrated when they were met with an image that they couldn't copy or paste text into (Relevant to Flexibility and Efficiency of Use
Help users recognize, diagnose, and recover from errors
Students were able to locate their grades, however one student was met with an error where the MyGrades link they thought was there, disappeared. The student was able to recover and access grades a different way.
" “That was really confusing, I’m not going to lie. It (Unit dashboard) didn’t have a MyGrades link, which was where I usually find my grades.”
MyGrades via the Shortcut tabs also showed an out of place black bar. Making it look like an error. Students instead accessed MyGrades via their Unit Dashboard.
