MAGMA TYPE OVERVIEW
LOW VISCOSITY
basaltic volcanism. basalt (<50%) most commonly produced at mid ocean ridges and at hot spots, create shield volcanoes
HIGH VISCOSITY
silicic volcanism, andesite (50-65% silica) and rhyolite (>65% silica) magmas, produced at subduction zone settings, create stratovolcanoes.
SiO2 = Silica, more silica = more viscosity

-
Magma = Melt (molten rock), crystals (solid rock) and gas. The amounts vary locally, regionally and globally
-
Gas comes out of magma solutions (exsolves) from the magma as pressure decreases during magma ascent, this provides the explosive potential
