VOLCANOLOGY
KEY FACTORS AFFECTING VOLCANISM (style of activity, how the activity may behave in atmos, how its generated)
Gravity (affects how lava flows disperse, how high plumes rise)
Atmospheric Pressure (places resistance on the central magma chamber, affects style of activity)
-
Tectonic environment (hotposts, plate boundaries)

Heat Generation Mechanism 2 main ways heat is generated.
- 1 = Radiation - decay of radioactive isotopes in interior liberates heat
- 2 = Tidal forces - astronomical objects move water, deform interior, liberating heat
Heat Loss
- Conduction = heat travels through the interior, then the crust
- Convection - plate tectonics - material cycles from the interior to the surface through plate tectonics - this is where most heat is lost
- Convection - Mantle Plumes - rise from the core-mantle boundary, dissipating heat.

Volcano = Surficial manefestation of a planet or moons internal thermal processes through emissions of solids, liquids and gaseous products at discrete surface locations.
Definition is NOT geomorphological as volcanoes have a variety of shape.
