Development
Measuring development
You can measure the development of a country by development indicators which are the standard of living and the quality of life
There are economic indicators such as wealth (GDP, GNP and GNP per capita) and jobs ( In MEDCs the jobs are better and are more tertiary and quarternary, but in LEDCs the jobs are more primary eg farming)
-
There a social indicators such as Health (life expectancy, death rate, child mortality rate and birth rate), Education (percentage on education and literacy rate) and equality (equal opportunities for women, fair distribution of wealth and freedom of speech)
United nations now uses a composite meter (GNP per capita, number of years schooling and life expectancy
-
The development gap is the gap between the richest and more developed countries and the poorer and less developed countries
-
How social, political, historical and environmental factors have helped and hindered development
Environmental
Climate (most poorer and less developed countries are in warm climates and tropical climates where the ground is less fertile, water is scarce and diseases flourish). Natural resources (some raw materials have helped countries flourish economically e.g oil). Location (being near a river of sea can allow trade routes to open up). Natural hazards (some countries for example Haiti are vulnerable to earthquakes).
Historical
War (Wars can use up a lot of resources and money to fund the campaign. Wars can cause to break ups with partnering countries). If there is no improvement nothing will happen. Communism (groups cannot excel and are kept the same).
Political
Trade (branching trade routes can raise economical factors). Corruption (countries need good, strong and honest leaders, how these leaders keep money for themselves and do not let it filter to the population).
Social
Discrimination (some groups may have less opportunities and this can hold back overall development, eg if women are not educated as the same level as men. Overpopulation (when the population growth outstrips resources.
