SYSTEMS (Human Body Systems)
The Digestive System
Mouth
• Digestion begins in the mouth
• The teeth chew the food into smaller pieces
(to increase surface are of food digestive juices can act on)
• Saliva moistens and partially digests food
Oesophagus / Gullet
• A tube that connects mouth to stomach
• Has muscles to push chewed food down from mouth to stomach
Stomach
• Food is mixed with digestive juices
• Food will then be digested until semi-solid
Small Intestine
• Mixed with more digestive juices
• Digested food is absorbed through the walls of the small intestine into the bloodstream
• Blood then transports it to various parts of the body
• Digestion is completed here
Large Intestine
• Undigested food is moved into the large intestine
• Water and minerals are absorbed from the undigested food.
• They pass through the walls of the large intestine and enter the blood
Anus
• The remaining undigested food forms the waste materials which are removed through the anus
