Coastal Landscapes
Weathering: the breaking down and decaying of rocks by natural processes acting on rocks, cliffs and valley sides.
Mechanical (freeze thaw) : This happened when by the processes of repeating thawing of water in cracks or holes in a rocks. When water freezes, it expands by 9% causing stress within the rock. When the ice melts the water travels deeper into the rock and repeats the processes many times and parts of the rock may crack off.
Chemical (acid rain) : rainwater is slightly acidic. When this rain falls on rocks such as limesstone and chalk a weak chemical reaction takes place, causeing the rocks to weaken and break down.
Biological : The roots of growing plants can widen cracks in rocks. Burrowing animals and nesting birds on cliff faces can also cause rocks to weaken and decay.
