Training Needs Analysis
Definition
Needs assessment(or needs analysis) is a process by which an organisation’s HRD needs are identified and articulated. It is the starting point of the HRD and training process.
-
-
Discrepancies or gaps between employees' skills and the skills required for effective current job performance
Discrepancies (gaps) between current skills and the skills needed to perform the job successfully in the future
-
Purpose
HRD professionals then know where and what kinds of programs and interventions are needed, who needs them and whether there are currently any obstacles hindering its effectiveness. Criteria can then be established to guide the evaluation process. This then makes it obvious that the needs analysis is critical for an effective HRD effort.
Training and HRD needs
The concept of need typically refers to a discrepancy or gap between what an organisation expects to happen and what actually occurs.
The identified needs focus on correcting substandard performance.
Types of training needs
Diagnostic needs focus on the factors that lead to effective performance and prevent performance problems, rather than emphasizing existing problems. Diagnostic needs are identified by studying the different factors that may impact performance. The goal is to determine how effective performance is obtained.
Analytical needs is to identify new or better ways to perform tasks. These needs are generally discovered by intuition, insight or expert consideration.
Compliance needs are needs mandated by law. They involve mandated training programs like safety training, food handling or compliance with healthcare regulations. It is important to recognise that some HRD interventions are driven primarily by legal mandate because this can affect how the intervention is perceived as well as how it is conducted.
