Life Cycle of Butterflies
Stage one
Egg
The eggs are very small oval like eggs
Shape of the egg depends on the type of butterfly that laid it
Eggs are laid on the leaves of plants
Stage two
Larva (Caterpillar)
The egg hatches into a larva/caterpillar
The caterpillar stage does NOT last long
Mostly what caterpillars do in this stage is eat
Caterpillars eat leaves on plants (start eating the one they hatched on)
Need to eat in order to grow
Their exoskeleton/skin does not stretch or grow, they grow by "molting" several times while it grows
Stage three
Pupa (Chrysalis)
The pupa stage is one of the coolest stages of a butterfly's life
When a caterpillar is done growing they have reached their full length/weight so they form themselves into a pupa.
From the outside of a pupa, the caterpillar may look like its resting, but really its changing rapidly
The pupa is where the caterpillar forms into a butterfly over time
Stage four
Adult Butterfly
When the Pupa stage is over its finally a butterfly
A butterfly's wings have to be dry to be able to fly
As soon as they are able to fy they immediately try to find a mate
