Cell Division
stem cells
-
stem cells from embryos and bone morrow can be grown in a lab to produce genetically identical cells and made to differentiate into specialised cells to use in medicine or research
-
therapeutic cloning - an embryo can be made to have the same genetic information as the patient so its wouldn't be rejected by the patients body
-
conditions - insulin producing cells for diabetes, nerve cells for those paralysed by spinal injuries
mitosis
- chromosomes line up at the centre of the cell and cell fibres pull them apart, the two arms of each chromosomes go to opposite ends of the cell
- membranes form around each of the sets, these become the nuclei of the two new cells (the nucleus has divided)
- lastly the cytoplasm and cell membrane divide
- the cells are identical and the DNA is identical to the parent cell
-
stem cells in plants
-
-
can be used to grow crops of identical plants that have desired features for farmers e.g. disease resistance
the nucleus of a cell contains the genetic material in the form of chromosomes which are coiled up lengths of DNA molecules
