Causes
Peasants and middle classes: The peasant and middle classes were the Third Estate. They paid taxes to run the country. The peasants paid taxes to the clergy and nobility
Absolute monarchy: The French people thought King Louis XVI was too powerful.. People also did not like his wife, Marie Antoinette
The American War of Independence: Some French leaders wanted to follow the example of America, which got rid of all-powerful rulers. French helped America in the War of Independence and now France was nearly bankrupt. The king needed to raise taxes
The meeting of the Estates-General: The king called the Estates-General together to pass more taxes. The Third Estate wanted all three estates to meet as on but the First and Second Estates wanted to vote separately. Eventually the Third Estate got it's way and they formed Constituents Assembly
The Fall of the Bastille: People in Paris suffered from bread shortages and high prices. They attacked the Bastille - a large prison fortress - because they thought it stored arms. The bastille was captured on the 14 July

Nobility and clergy: These were known as the First and the Second Estates. The Nobility and Clergy did not pay taxes. They had complete power over the peasants

The ideas of the French Revolution spread to other countries. These ideas influenced the development of the modern world as people wanted greater freedom and equality

Middle-class power: The middle classes got more power in France as the clergy and nobility lost much of their power
Metric system: The French introduced the metric system, which spread to the rest of Europe

The example of the USA: The USA won its independence from the stronger power of Britain; this encouraged other countries to try to gain independence

Armies: France owned its survived to conscription. Now other countries followed its example and armies grew much larger and war became more destructive
