Probably lived 300/400/500 BCE
Born from mother's hip after the God Buddha in the form of a white elephant entered her womb through her hip. Prophecy: She will give birth to a son who will become either monarch or Buddha
Lived secluded lavish life as a prince until age 29
Despite his father's efforts, he saw the four signs: an old person, an ill person, a corpse and a hermit
Tried to live as a hermit, then got the notion of the "golden middle way" - Magga
Became enlightened under Bohdi tree at age 35. Stayed on Earth to help others reach Nirvana. Easiest then - very difficult now as it was such a long time since he died
Lived until 80 when he died after eating meat he knew was bad so the one who gave it to him would gain good karma
Built a stupa (rounded building containing remains/relics)
on his grave

Eight Folded Path

8 possessions: 3 robes, one plate, one shaving knife, one needle, one belt, one sieve (as Buddha had)
Beg for food until 12 every day (religious function for villagers as well - gain karma)
108 prayer beads symbolizing 108 priests which were present at Buddha's name giving ceremony
Stays with temple for 3 months, otherwise live on road or as pilgrim

Rules for life
All Buddhists: Not allowed to kill, lie, get intoxicated, steal, have sex outside of marriage
Monks: Stay away from sex completely, not eat after 12 midday, not have comfortable beds, not own money, wear perfume of jewelry, not participate in dance, music, theater, amusements
Give offerings to monks to gain karma
Killing animals intentionally is not okay, but eating meat someone else has killed is okay
Types of Buddhism
Theravada
Goal: Arhat
Buddha can only assist you, there is no god
Only monks/nuns can reach Nirvana (via knowledge and right conduct), as it takes so much time meditating.
Mainly in Sri Lanka, Burma, Thaiand, parts of India
Only one Buddha at the same time. Waiting for Buddha to come to Earth, reborn in his time to reach Nirvana
Mahayana
Mainly Japan, China, Korea, Japan
