HIDDEN FIGURES
Book
Symbols- A big symbol in the book were the "colored" signs . posted around the space center. It causes a lot of drama throughout the book and shows a lot about the inequality at Langley.
-
Main Characters- The main character in the book was Dorothy Vaughn with appearences from Katherine and Mary
Overall Message- You can still do all the same things as someone else even if you are a woman or have colored skin. It's whats on the inside that counts
Colors/Scenery- The book took place at Langley and showed the history of Langley and how each of the girls came to work at NASA
Movie
Actors/Actresses- The actresses fit the role of the characters that I thought in my head. I pictured Mary slightly differently but overall they matched the pictures in my head.
Symbols- Pearls were a big symbol of inequality. Katherine had a big moment in the movie where she basically yelled at everyone about how the jewelry that most women wore to work was a pearl necklace but since the black women were paid much less they couldn't afford it.
Colors/Scenery- The colors used in the movie were warm tones during happy scenes and dark, grayish colors during intense scenes.
Perspective- The movie is focused a lot around Katherine, orothy and Mary working at NASA. It skips the backround stories of all besides Katherine and it also skips them working their way to NASA.
Overall Message- The main message in the movie in inequality. Throughout the duration of the movie different things happened that surrounded the topic of inequality especially in the work place.
Differences
~ The book focused more around Dorothy's life rather than in the movie when they focused more on Katherine, Mary and Dorothy's lives.
~ In the book they started out working at NACA whereas in the movie they jumped right into NASA instead.
-
~ In the movie Katherine's husband was already dead and she marries a new man. In the book he was sick before he died.
-
Similarities
~ Katherine had the big fight scene with her boss that gained her respect and people started treating her better.

Plot Points
- In the book, Mary Jackson was given an assignment by John Becker.
- In the book they cover the time between 1943-1962 while in the book it was mainly set in 1961-1962 showing a small glimpse into Katherines' childhood.
- In the movie the papers that were given to Katherine were blacked out to withhold information because she didn't have "clearance." Meanwhile in the book they papers were fine.
- In the movie Katherine was showed as a young girl sipping a few grades meanwhile in the book it says Katherine went to a high school at the age of 14 and was judged for being smart.
Personal Response
- Fiction books are used a lot for enjoyment rather than information. When you read a nonfiction book it gives you real life information. You learn reality when you read nonfiction. When you read a fiction book you are able to use your imagination to make up scenarios and information that most likely won’t happen in real life. When we read Huck Finn earlier this year you could tell it was a fictional story. Mark Twain even tells you in the beginning that it’s non fiction. Huck Finn was trying to convey a theme while still making it “fun” to read. Hidden Figures jumps right into the harsh reality of life and tells you the theme.
- I enjoyed the movie far more than the book. The book had a lot of detail and information but the movie was more of a story than a documentary. It was also super easy to understand whereas the book was a bit more difficult because of all the information they tried to cram. The book wasn't very organized and kept jumping between people and timelines but the movie ran in time order and you could tell who was talking about who. Most of the time I prefer the book to the movie but this time I prefer the movie to the book.
