Protein for ruminants
Rumen degradable protein = Rumen, UDP and Microbial protein digested and absorbed as amino acids in small intestine. Remainder is lost in faeces
Rumen degradable protein - 40-80% - is available to microbes to make more microbes, amino acid composition entering the rumen is different to that leaving it
Rumen undegradable protein 20-60%, bypass protein as it bypasses the rumen and is digested and absorbed in the small intestine
-
Efficiency of microbial growth - most efficient when concentrate it at a sufficient level and forage quality is high - must be in balance
Microbial protein yield dependant on - nitrogen supply to the microbe (ERDP), energy supply to the microbes (FME), Speed of flow through the rumen.
If energy is deficient compared to protein this can lead to excess N wasted causing blood ammonia to increase and as a result blood urea to increase
Shortcomings of MP system - no account for amino acid supply post rumen, QDP assessment assumes 20% lost this is not always accurate. FME ignores energy from AA oxidation or high N or low energy diets. Microbes can use some ME in lactic acid.
