Biodiversity
Animal Sampling
Pooter - Sucking on mouthpiece, draws insects into chamber
-
-
-
Kick Sampling - Disturb river bed, hold net downstream catches organisms.
-
-
Plant Sampling
Point Quadrat - Frame, horizontal bar, pins in bar equal distance, each plant pin touches is recorded

Factors affecting
Deforestation = reduces no. trees. If only single type of tree felled, reduce species biodiversity of area. Reduces no. animal species present, destroys habitats and food sources. Animals forced to migrate, increases biodiversity of surrounding areas.
Agriculture - Deforestation for crop planting, removal of hedgerows to use large machines or more crop space = reduces species biodiversity and destroys habitats. Chemicals kills insects = reduces species diversity. MONOCULTURE = production of one crop, reduces biodiversity of area due to few species.
Climate Change - Melting ice caps = reduce species biodiversity, destroys habitat and extinction.
Rising Sea = Reduces terrestrial habitat, reducing freshwater habitat.
High temp & Less rain = Xerophytes dominant, other species extinct.
-
Reliability
-
Chance - May not be representative, larger sample size, better chance.
Essential in maintaining a balanced ecosystem for all organisms. All species = Interconnected. We rely on other organisms to survive. Our action can reduce biodiversity.
Habitat Biodiversity - No. diff. habitats in a specific area. Greater Habitat Biodiversity = Greater Species Diversity
Genetic Biodiversity - Variety of genes make up a species. Many diff. alleles of same gene lead to variation e.g. different dog breeds.
Random Sampling = Each individual has equal chance of being chosen. Make grid, use random number generator, collect sample points.
Used to measure estimate of the no. individuals in an area. Can be used to measure specific characteristics e.g. height of a sample of wheat.
Aesthetic = Relaxation, inspiration.
Economic = Promote tourism, greater product manufacturing
Ecological = Protect food chain/web. Keystone species important role in maintaining ecological community.
