Getting the students out of the classroom into the outdoors will make the students feel more comfortable as it is not in their nature to be restricted to a classroom. Give the students the opportunity to tell stories along your walk, let them share knowledge and their stories about the environment. This is getting to know your students, learning about their surroundings from each other developing social relationships. Whilst looking at their surroundings a cross curriculum of mathematics can be added by getting students to look at the symmetry of objects around them.
