Women and the suffragettes
Women and the Suffragettes are keen to put in valuable work in the war to not only help Britain become more successful, but to also make women more valued in the society around them.
Women were made to help in the war but not actually on the front-line. Some jobs that women had were to work in the munitions to produce shells for the artillery, Some volunteered to become nurses and a few women were able to work in the Women;s Royal Air Force but they were not involved in direct combat.
The Suffragettes would give out white feathers to people who would refuse to fight in the war to make them feel guilty and embarrassed as others laughed at the
Government
The government put DORA in place (Defence of the Realm Act) in order to keep the streets dark at night. These things were put in place to make sure people weren't staying out for long at night so they were ready got their jobs in the moring.
They also dilute the beer so it is not as strong and harder to get drunk from
Rationing
They used rationing so you could keep track of how much food you are eating and so we have to import less food from outside of the country.
Disagreeing with statement
Conscientious Objectors
Not everyone agreed to join the war, such as Conscientious Objectors who refused to kill people through
Religious or Humanitarian Reasons
They had to convince an army committee that there objections were real
These men would become drivers, cooks or hospital orderlies but some were imprisoned for the whole time of the war and some were shot as cowards
People who went on strikes
In 1918 alone, over 900 000 went on strike, 6 mill working days lost
(They went on strike because they had fixed wages, despite working conditions and hours worked)
One set of workers at Roway Iron and Steel Works went on strike in protest against a tax levied on ginger beer, a drink ‘considered essential to their work’
Trade Unions
Criticized war and government for taking over their factories and turning it into munitions factories
