king and queen were the highest power. almost absolute rule still had to follow the customs. 2 kingdoms ruled together 1. castile 2. Aragon each had there own parliament (government)
parliament- called the cortez. approved new laws. king and queen could dismiss them whenever they wanted. controlled the treasury
Church: pope could ask church to oppose royal decrees (Orders). but king + queen put people of their choosing in important church positions so they wouldn't be opposed.
Aragon- main economies were -agriculture woll products. barcelona + Valencia were major sea ports for importing and exporting. black Death decreased half the population so agriculture + wool manufacturing declined
Castile: agriculture, olives and grapes , wheat, rice and fruit. when the king and queen came into power agriculture was declining. sheep- farmers formed an organization called the mesta. they gave money to the treasury in exchange for more land. sheep grazed on farmland so less crops were grown and less money made
Problems: Spain did not manufacture enough products to make money. nobility bought lots of land + did not do anything with it. war meant people wanted guns not wool. gold and silver were shipped into spain making it a rich country but spain had more money. than goods so prices were high.
priests- religious order, Jesuits Dominicans, franciscans, wealthy, educated , operated school, be a leader in a parish(community)
