Why are some PG's more successful than others?
Wealth
Govt must listen to groups with financial and economic power.
E.G BP, BT and Tesco
Due to their major employment and investment sources in the economy.
They have knowledge for trade and economic policies.
They can employ professional lobbyists and move donations to parties.
High public profile.
Size
More income = professional campaigners.
Large groups claim to represent public opinion and have electoral impact.
e.g NSPCC, RSPB have 1 millions+ members.
More members means more income from subscriptions
e.g 90% of GreenPeace income is from members.
Govt Views
Success is more likely if govt is more sympathetic (same aims/goals).
If there is an ideological clash, group more likely to be an ideological outsider and less attention.
E.G Country Side Alliance and fox hunting ban with David Cameron who was a big fan of fox hunting.
Popular Support
Groups with high levels of support are more successful due to electoral damage.
Some groups gain more support from public than others.
E.G 38 degrees have 1.9 million members in the UK .
BUT
public support doesn't always win.
E.G Stop The War campaign for Iraq.
Effectiveness of Opposition
Groups will confront and oppose the groups.
E.G Ash opposed by well resourced tobacco lobby in 1980's.
E.G Country Side Alliance opposed anti-hunting ban and managed to delay the bill.
Organisation and Leadership
Interest groups tend to have better organisation and cause groups are usually more powerful as their members are easy to organise.
E.G Doctors over Patients.
Good organisation means better leaders and more money is required.
A good effective leader provides; political contacts and skills, media skills and knowledge of how policies work.
E.G Jamie Oliver for quality school meals.
