Exploiting the Rainforest
Logging
Furniture, Paper
Mahogany - £500 per meter cubed
One worker cuts down 30 trees a day
10 Million hectares lost
Loss of habitat
Orangutans / monkeys can suffer
Cattle Ranching
Results in Logging because of the large space available and the space need for the big farms
The soils become infertile
No trees to make the soils refertile
Takes up 8.4 million hectares of land each year
Responsible for 340 million tonnes of carbon each year
Causes consequences as river saltation
Palm Oil Plantations
Grown for it's commercial values
Most profitable cash crop
It's used to make fuel, margarine, cake and shampoo's
3 Million people employed in Indonesia harvest the crop
Before it can be planted vast areas of trees have to be cleared
Mineral Extraction
Gold, Copper, Diamonds and other precious metals are all extracted from the ground.
The rocks are rich with these minerals in the rainforests
The money that is created through mineral extraction allows them to build a better infrastructure in the country
The extraction of the minerals can cause terrible effects, for example in local communities it can cause water contamination, particularly downstream.
People have to be moved off their land to make way for roads and space so large machinery can come thorugh
Tourism
Because of the interesting cites and animals in the rainforests this can lead to other things
Hotels are built in vunrable areas.
Roads have to be built so areas of land and habitats are destroyed
Ape communities in Indonesia have started to become vulnerable to human diseases because tourists have offered them food.
Dam Building
Thousands of people are forced from their homes
Many places are flooded upstream
Habitats are destroyed and animals lose their homes
Road Building
Roads are requires so that lots of the deforestation processes that take place can happen.
The Amazonian Highway has resulted in 400Km wide expanse of forest to be cut down
A road building project in the Congo has resulted in 50,000KM of trees to be cut down.
Road building allows thing to happen in the rain forest. It means that deforestation can happen.
