A View From The Bridge "Characters". (need to be continued and finished!!)
Alfieri's Monologue
shows the mindset of the people in the community, shows how both the American and Italian law has been a great part of their lives which places a stage for the thoughts of the Characters
Introduces the audience to the protagonist, Eddie and portrays his downfall through the use of "was" this make the monologue very much more dramatic
Character of Eddie Carbone
Characteristics
Over-protective
Self-Possessive
Pride
Male Dominance
these Characteristics lead the character of Eddie to finally depict him as a "mentally unstable" one to the audience
Points that make this character very memorable
the irony he develops when he calls immigration upon his own cousins
he emphasizes the fact that Beatrice and Catherine should not call upon immigration on their cousins as it would greatly affect his social prejudice which was already supported by the hard-work and sweat which he sacrifices everyday working in the ports of Brooklyn
Dialogues that support his change of perspectives :
1) " Just remember kid you can quicker get back a million dollars that was stolen than a word that you gave away"
the inability of him to maintain a healthy relationship with any of the other character who did it exceptionally great
one of the most prominent method Miller chose to use to portray his mental instability was the unethical love he had grown for his daughter-like niece
because Eddie failed to maintain a good relationship with his fellow characters he is depicted to the audience as a man not of his word, he is himself unable to control his feelings and emotions which rule over his thoughts that only work towards the path of winning social pride as it was vital for a man to like him to achieve a respectable position in the society of Red Hook, thus because of his overpowered and uncontrollable feeling he had lost his social pride which was once his only aim in living a life as an Italian American.
POINT TO NOTE : WHILE WRITING ESSAY ALWAYS MAKE REFERENCE TO HIS PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS AS THEY HAD PLAYED AN ENORMOUS ROLE IN BRING OUT A MEMORABLE CHARACTER LIKE EDDIE TO THE AUDIENCE
Character of Catherine
Personal Characteristics
Immature
loving
points that had made her character very memorable
SHE WAS A WOMAN OF FUTURE AMERICA
Catherine throughout the play sets back to the audience as a woman of the future who is willing to do what she thinks and talk out her thoughts. Through such intense characterisation Catherine's mindsets contradict to the mindset of Eddie eventually pulling up bitterness in between their mutual understanding
She had played the role of a symbol of the future States
Greatly lifted up by the fact that she was the only character who was well educated (except for Alfieri) and "She's got a job " and "picked her out of the whole class"
Centre of the storyline
even though the entire drama revolves around the life of Eddie Carbone, one of the most prominent characters in his life vitally include Catherine, as she contributes a lot for his fatal ending
Beatrice
