RA Essay Thus Far
Topic: Peggy McIntosh's "White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack."
Introduction
“the good we secure for ourselves is precarious and uncertain until it is secure for all of us and incorporated into our common life.” -Jane Addams
I connect a quote from the first president of the International league for Peace and Freedom, a group that produces the magazine
Peace and Freedom
that McIntosh publishes her article in.
Audience: primarily white women and men
Main Idea: white privilege is unearned and harmful to society as a whole
Thesis: Although the historical context of 1980s is riddled with racially-biased policies and hate crimes, McIntosh keeps her “White Privilege: Unpacking the invisible knapsack” focussed on tackling the issue of white power in America. She creates a logical argument, using the better-known concept of male privilege to illuminate the lesser-known white privilege, as she understands that logical appeals and personal anecdotes are the best ways to reach her audience of primarily white women and men.
Body Paragraph 1
Topic sentence: The 1980s in America was a time when racially-motivated policies were still being put in place to harm certain groups of people.
McIntosh notes that she was only taught to recognize racism as individual people doing harmful things, however, racism is more deeply rooted than that.
Uses how she personally once viewed racism, to push like-minded people to alter their perception of racism
Her readers are likely experiencing the same variety of everyday privileges that she does, therefore her personal anecdotes are so impactful to her argument in proving that white privilege exists and is damaging society.
Historical context of Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1986. This shows why her article is necessary
Continuing with the legal system, I talk about how McIntosh can count on help if she is ever in legal trouble. Because her audience has likely not been in a great deal of legal trouble, she uses this example so that they can better relate to the struggles that other groups of people must go through on an every day basis.
Body Paragraph 3
Topic Sentence: McIntosh also notes the similarities between gender bias and racial bias to illuminate the severity and deeply-rooted nature of white privilege in America.
In her Article, McIntosh opens with an observation that men who are benefiting from male privilege do not want to admit that they have an advantage
This is to maximize understanding for her audience , as they are more familiar with the idea of male privilege.
She uses their understanding and charges them to apply this knowledge to white privilege, a topic her readers are not familiar with.
Privileges are denied and protected - McIntosh
McIntosh desires her audience to understand for them to benefit from white privilege means other groups of people must suffer.
