Censorship
Benefits
- Media content that is racially offensive or culturally inflammatory in nature or intent can spark social outrage
- Given the wide spectrum of racial and religious groups that form any society, it is esp impt that the social fabric of the nation is not torn apart
- Prevents/diverts potential conflicts
- Limits the exposure of undesirable material given the increased accessibility of information
- Nathan Martinez shot dead his step-mother and step-sister after watching the film "Natural Born Killers" ten times
Costs
- mouthpiece to promote certain governmental agendas
- Suppresses all information that may jeopardize a govt's position, esp in authoritarian govt (North Korea) that systematically sieves out all potentially controversial content --> makes extensive use of media as propaganda to brainwash their masses--> submissive society not informed of the real truth
- Devoid of diversity and transparency --> viewers constrained to only one possible viewpoint, knowledge restricted to what govt chooses to make avail
- Controversial issues are repressed, which may lead to social instability subsequently
- Self-censorship causes media audiences to receive an unbalanced representation of their society/issues
- Nature of mass media has become so customizable and selective that audiences may now choose which piece of information reaches them eg social media's ability to tailor users' feeds to their preference
- Restriction to only particular POVs: biased representation of facts and half-informed judgements lead to stereotyping of people/issues.
- Robert Mugabe, the formercorrupt president of Zimbabwe, forced all news broadcasting firms to close down, allowing only the govt-related news firm to disseminate info --> people were unaware of his atrocious human rights record
- Greate Firewall of China
-
Economic
- Need to ensure that a constant pool of people are engaged and interested in what they have to offer <viewership>
- Most sensationalising story opportunity often comes from the problem itself --> stories on scandals , natural disasters and major crime syndicates excite the masses and are headlined to drive the frenzy --> solutions are often not as publicised as readers get bored
- Reports on Islamic State's beheading of a US journalist focused alot on the incident --> responses to the beheading (such as international aid) are often more banal and get less viewership
Overexposure
- Power to influence our subconscious mindsets: virtual sensory overload --> scarcely consciously realise its presence anymore
Liberating force
serves to free many people across the globe from oppression by being a voice that sheds light on their predicament
- New media --> global outreach + lightning fast speed of info dissemination makes it uncontrollable by dictators
- Gives a voice to the common people, able to raise issues and garner support
- Power to liberate people from injustice (eg under corrupt govt or societal discrimination), by granting them freedom to express opinions
Governance
- A free and liberal media (in most democratic ctys) can exert pressure on the govt to make certain decisions or implement certain policies
- Exposes the wrongs of current govt
- Ability to inspire mass public dissent against govt --> can crystallise into mass strikes or rallies --> controlling actions of govt
