Catholic teaching

procreative
Only God creates life, he acts through sex to create life.
Humane vitae - each marriage act must remain open to the transition of life.
Genesis 1 - Be fruitful and multiply
Youcat - allow children to proceed from their love
Theology of the body - the way men and women's bodies are made shows that sexual intercourse leads to both greater intimacy and the possibility of creating new life the two functions are inseperable
this means that the church is against same sex couples because they cannot procreate,, although it is ok if they don't have sex
CC does not allow same sex marriage in church
Unitive
Mark - man will be joined to his wife and the two shall become one flesh
Youcat - Husband and wife should encounter each other in bodily union
Marital
For the marriage to be consummated the couple must have sex
Mark - a man shall leave his father and mother to be joined to his wife.
Theology of the body - the body and marital sex are good. extramarital sex and contraception damage the significance and role of sex
less likely to get an std :
exclusive - a couple commit to each other bodily for life and adultery would be betrayal and destroy the relationship
CCC - He who commits adultery fails in his commitment
Contrasting views

Contraception has made casual sex possible
some people think its alright as long as they love each other.
As long as no is hurt in any way

adultery
Can be forgiven in certain circumstances, e.g. if partner turned out to be very bad such as a criminal
Personal happiness is important, remaining in an unhappy marriage is not good
People can change as they get older and no longer be compatible
people can make mistakes especially if they marry when they are very young
everyone is entitled to forgiveness if they make a mistake
