Medicine 1900-present
Preventing disease
Compulsory vaccinations
people had to pay for the early vaccinations - in 1938, 3000 people died in a diphtheria epidemic - this led to a government-funded immunisation
Prevention measures
government actions:
- funding more testing and vaccinations
- better disposal of rubbish and sewage
- laws reducing air and water pollution
- laws banning the advertising of cigarettes and smoking in public places
- laws improving health and safety at work
- environmental health officers inspecting food outlets
Improved access to care
NHS means treatment is free, everyone can access same care - however healthcare provision was unequal across different parts of the country - some types of health care are still difficult to access
