Relevance
This book is extremely relevant as I am currently in the process of implementing the math workshop in my classroom. We are aiming district-wide to implement a math workshop and this is one of many great resources to aid in that.
Each chapter begins with a "problem of the day" and a "postulate" and ends with a "Quod Erat Demonstrandum" (or a "What was to be shown" summary). These components help to effectively deliver the information from the book.
Authority
She is the senior director of Education with the Denver-based Public Education and Business Coalition.
"She works with teachers, schools and districts locally and nationally to promote rich thinking in all content areas, especially in math and science" (Ward Hoffer, 2012).
She has written multiple books including:
Cultivating STEM Identities
Science as Thinking
Developing Literate Mathematicians
Accuracy
The author often references many different scholarly sources throughout the book. It contains a detailed bibliography with four and a half pages of quality, scholarly resources.
The book also uses real student work examples and real conversations and lessons that have been transcribed. These examples are "from the field" and are great to support the information laid out in the book.
Purpose
The purpose of this book is to inform teacher about how to implement a math workshop.
According to the back of the book summary, "Wendy explains the core elements of math workshop and then provides detailed strategies for implementing the workshop structure.
Minds on Mathematics
shows how to make the workshop model come to life in your classroom" (Ward Hoffer, 2012).
