The War Poets
When the W.W.I broke out
a lot of young men volunteered
for military services
most of them regarded
the conflict as an adventure sterted
for noble ends but this emotion
was replaced by doubt and disillusionment
Life in the trenches
was hell
for the decaying bodies the rats fed on
for the repeated bombings
for the use of poison gas in a warfare
Soldiers improvised verses
did not reach the ears of the
people living comfortably at home
A group of poets experienced
the fighting and in most cases
lost their lives in the conflicts
that represents modern warfare in
a realistic and unconventional way
these poets are known as the War Poets
Reaction to the war
can be divided into different stages
Anger
when realized
the lie of war rhetoric,
Siegfried Sassoon
turned anger into the main theme fo his poetry
compassion
Wilfred Owen's poetry
is a sort of elegy
for the young soldiers he had come
to love and admire
Rosenberg had a more detached
unsentimental view shared by writers
like Ernest Hemingway
the patriotic enthusiasm
Rupert Brook was born in 18867
wealthy family,
good student and athlete
became popular
especially for his handsome looks
He saw little combat
during the war since he contracted
blood-poisoning an died in April 1915
Brooke's reputation as a War Poet rests
