Bloody Mary: She was the daughter of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon with the name of Mary I, the queen of England. She restored Roman Catholicism. She practices Catholicism, and because of that, anyone who refused to practice her religion was burned at the stake, which is why she is known as Bloody Mary after killing thousands of people. #
New churches: After the Church started noticing that Luther was "dangerous", and that people could start relying more on the Bible than the priests, the pope excommunicated him. later on, his ideas created a new denomination, Lutheranism, which was also the first Protestant denomination.
Catholic Church: In this period of time, the church made really bad stuff, like the selling of indulgences, but not just that, they created false teachings and told the people that they came from the Bible, and they didn´t. the church will do anything to gain power and money.
Indulgences: The indulgences were like tickets, tickets that erased the people's sins. The Catholic church made these "tickets" to gain power and money. What they were selling was wrong, and Martin Luther didn't like that, that is why he created the 95 theses and complained about the church. #
Sinners
In the Reformation, sinners often had punishments and were tortured with torture devices. sinners were the people that didn´t follow the teachings of God, in this case everything, everything in this period of time can cause you to become a sinner, and that is for the church to sell more indulgences and gain money
Peasant Revolts
Peasants liked what they heard about Luther. Their lives had always been hard and noble landowners the taxes peasants had to pay. Because of the suffering, Luther's ideas made them revolt. They thought that if Luther had the right to rebel against an unjust pope, they had the right to stand up to greedy nobles.
Excommunication: It is when a person is no longer a member of the Church and can no longer receive the sacraments. # #
Dark Ages: It also refers to Middle Ages. During this years, there was a lot of religious struggle and corruption. #
Protestantism: was a revolt, of teachings, that spread all around Europe, Martin Luther and John Calvin created their own Protestantism. they protested against the Catholic church, where they promoted a reformation, that is when Martin Luther created the 95 theses. #
Calvinism: is the beliefs of John Calvin, and explains how the church was creating false teachings towards the people, he also talked about a reformation. He had the same ideology as Luther, he wanted to spread the bible to whole Europe. # #
30 year war: It was a series of wars in Central Europe that was formed by the conflict between Protestants and Catholics and political struggles between the Holy Roman Empire and other powers. #
Printing Press: the printing press was very important during this period of time. Especially for Martin Luther. with this machine he printed a lot of copies of the bible and send it all around Europe, so the people know the truth about God. this was an advantage for Lutheranism, but not for the church. this just made the church angrier.
Torture devices: the Catholic church used these methods to punish the ones that didn´t follow instructions or had revolt ideas. A lot of these methods put the victim to suffer in a severe way, like taking their nails out or taking their skin out...FDGH #
Impalement: when an object such as a pole or a steel stick penetrates the body from the torso up to your mouth. It was a very painful way to die.
Denailing: Is when the victim has to put their whole hand in a wood plank, and the torturer puts a screw that penetrates your nail.
The Bible: tthe Catholic church had power in the bible. Not anyone can see it. it was prohibited for the people of the town to see it. just the monks and friars of the church. in this period of time, no one knew the true teachings of God, because the church invented teachings so they can gain power and money. #
Desiderius Erasmus: he was born on October 28, 1466. He was the greatest. before that he was a Catholic priest, he was very important for wanting to change the Bible into different languages, and he did, he changed it to Latin, Spanish, and Greek. he believed that everyone had the right to read the bible and know the truth about Christianity and God. he hated the Catholic church he wanted to made a reformation.
Christian humanism: Erasmus wrote that human being could use their reason to become better Christians and based on that, improve the Church. He studied ancient Christian works for inspiration. He also wrote that what mattered was that people had to be good in their daily lives. It was not enough just going to the Church. #
Martin Luther: He was born on November 10, 1483. He worked as a frail for the Catholic church. he hated the church because they sold indulgences and did bad things. He created the 95 theses, and Protestantism, and his "religion" Lutheranism. he got excommunicated from the church. Many Germans supported him. He wanted to the church bring back the real teachings of the bible.
95 Theses: The 95 theses is basically a book, written by Martin Luther, which told all Luther´s complaints and bad things about the Catholic church. He wrote these theses so the people know the truth about the church. #
Lutheranism: Is a branch of Protestant Christianity, which explains Martin Luther's teachings. he wanted to reform the Catholic church. Many Germans followed him, and a lot of them got inspired and created new branches for Protestantism like Calvinism, which the creator is John Calvin. #
Diet of Worms: It was an imperial diet, an assembly, of the whole empire. this Diet was also known as the edict of Worms, which talks about Martin Luther and the reasons of the protestant reformation. It was made from 28 January to 25 May 1521, Emperor Charles V was present. #
