George Orwell

Born Eric Blair in India in 1903

as a small child he was taken

to England by his mother and was

educated first at st. Cyprian's then at Etonl

he could not

stand the pressure to conform to the values

of the English public school tradition

Orwell's last book Nineteen-Eighty-Four

he began to develop an independent-minded personality

professed atheism

and socialism

on leaving school he passed the

India Office examinations for the

Indian Imperial Police opting to serve

in Bruma, in 1927 he went on leave

he wished to break away from British

Imperialism in he wished to "escape from

every form of man's dominion over man"

back in London he started a social

experiment wearing second-hand clothes

he spent short periods living in common

lodging-houses

in this way he experienced poverty

and learned how works

institutions for the poor such as

prisons

lodging-houses

hostels

hospitals

worked

after a period in Paris where he worked

as a dishwasher in a hotel he decided

to begin publishing his works with

the pseudonym of George Orwell

in 1936 he married Eileen

who shared his interests

in literature and socialism

in December 1936 Orwell went to

Catalonia with his wife to report on the

Spanish Civil War

Back in England the Orwells adopted

an infant child and called him Richard

they both had a poor health

when the second World War broke out

Orwell moved to London and

in 1941, he joined the BBC

he also began writing Animal farm which

was published in 1945

was his most original novel it was published

in 1949 and soon became a best-seller

Orwell died of T.B. the following years

Orwell's life and work were marked by the

unresolved conflict between his middle-class

background and education and his

emotional identification with the working class

Orwell believed that the writer

should be independent than no good

writing could come of following a party line

he insisted on

and alert against the increasing

tolerance

justice

decency in human relationship

artificiality of urban civilization

Above all he presented a

devastating critique of totalitarian

he want to help his readers to

recognise tyranny in all its forms
