Carlos Cochón - Digital Camera
Thesis Statement: The digital camera is a modern day Marco Polo because it eventually 'evolved' into Photoshop, and also contributed to technology and art.
History of Digital Camera/Technology:
First EOS Canon Camera: Thirty years ago in March 1987, the very first EOS model, EOS 650, was released. EOS is the acronym for “Electro-Optical System”.
1987 - 1990 = 3 years!
Literally only took 3 years to get from the creation of the digital camera to the creation of adobe photoshop.
Why was is so important?
Education
Preservation
Communication
Ever heard of "A picture is worth a thousand words"?
Well, it's true because a word is just a word, meanwhile a photo shows so much more, and can have lots of meaning.
This is not an opinion though, as this phrase was supposed to signify the power of a photo, and meant that a photo could have different meaning in different people's eyes. It meant that a photo wasn't confined to a description of something, and could be seen from different perspectives (not literally).
How is the digital camera we know and love a modern day Marco Polo?
Photoshop:
Creation date of Adobe Photoshop: February 19, 1990
What does a digital camera do? It captures a moment. What did Marco Polo to be known so well? He published a book. And by doing that he also captured his moment.
The idea of capturing a moment so well as a digital camera wasn't realized until 1987. Luckily, the printing press allowed Marco Polo to capture his moment.
Technology:
Marco Polo came back from his journey to China and introduced Europe to technology that was unheard of. As we've learned through videos, China was a very advanced country at that time, and was way ahead of Europe.
Similarly, that's what the digital camera did. Cameras are everywhere nowadays; in computers, mobile phones, security
cameras
, they're everywhere. And the digital camera really changed technology as a whole, and how people viewed technology in itself.
Something that the digital camera did that Marco Polo didn't
exactly
do was influence art itself. Sure Marco Polo provided geographical knowledge and helped create more accurate maps, but the digital camera literally can combine a painting with photoshop. This is why the creation of the digital camera allowed for so much creativity. There really are no limits.
Additionally, the digital camera allows for communication. Your friend asks where you're at, and you take a picture with your
camera
from your mobile phone and send it to them. Beat that Marco Polo!
Who was Marco Polo?
Marco Polo was one of the first and most famous Europeans (he was Italian) to travel to Asia during the Middle Ages. During his 24 year travel along the Silk Road, Marco Polo reached China and Mongolia where he became Kublai Khan's confidant.
Shortened for essay
: Marco Polo was a famous Italian merchant that traveled to China and became Kublai Khan's companion. He is known from his book
Il Milione
, where he shared how much more advanced China was than Europe at the time.
Marco Polo was born around 1254 into a wealthy Venetian merchant family, though the actual date and location of his birth are unknown. His father and his uncle were successful jewel merchants who spent much of Marco's childhood in Asia. The polo brothers went as far as China. There they met the Mongol leader Kublai Khan, grandson of the great conqueror Genghis Khan. Kublai Khan took interest in Christianity and proceeded to ask the brothers to go to Rome and return with 100 popes and holy water from Jerusalem. In 1274 they set off to China for the second time, but this time they took Marco with them.
