Formative

Interim/Benchmark
a form of assessment that educators use to evaluate where their students are in the learning process and find out whether they are on track and usually given periodically during a course or school year
Example: standardized tests, end-of-course exams
Performance
a form of testing that have students perform a task rather than a multiple-choice test. This informs the teacher of what student has learned and how they comprehend the information.
Examples: explain historical events, generate scientific hypotheses
Diagnostic
a form of pre-assessment that informs a teacher of their students strengths, weaknesses, knowledge, and skills prior to instruction. It is used to diagnose student difficulties and to guide lesson and planning. Can be used at the beginning of the school year, chapter or unit.
