CH 9. FOREIGN RELATIONS
1509-1514
FRANCE
-
SCOTLAND
1513: James IV invades (adhering to Auld Alliance) - English victory at Battle of Flodden! James killed and infant son James V becomes heir - Scottish threat eliminated for a generation!
BUT Henry does not capitalise from gains - very costly, has to liquidate inheritcance to pay for the war = resentment of taxation in Yorkshire, much like 1489!
-
-
1514
VIII wants to resume invasion BUT Maximilian and Ferdinand make indivudal peace with France, and funds low
WOLSEY negotiates treaty with France - recognises English control of Tournai, restores French pension, marriage alliance with VIII's sister Mary and king of France Louis XIII
-
1514-1529
-
BASIS:
England was minor power, could not compete with other European powers
Auld Alliance was strong - if France and England cordial, so were Scotland and England
VIII overestimated English power, makes things difficult for Wolsey
By this point, runs out of $$!
