Homelessness: lost jobs, fell behind with mortgage payments and were forced to sell their homes or hand them over to banks. Became homeless and destitute
Helping the poor: didn't have a social security system (Laissz-Faire), private charities and wealthy individuals helped. 1/5 of children in New York were undernourished
The Dust Bowl
overproduction and a serious drought caused 20 million hectares of land to become like a desert - migration from the South and midwest to California in search of work and better land to farm

Opposition: The Supreme Court (NRA unconstitutional), Republicans (doing too much, dictatorship), Radical Critics/Individuals (not doing enough) eg. Father Coughlin and Dr Francis Townsend (National Union for social justice) and Huey Long
