Social system
Thegns - warriors who defended king and got land as reward, tax collectors and organised local repairs
Coerls - owned small amount of land, all male, had to serve in army when needed
The Earls - Owned lots of land, about 6 of them, kings advisers, raised army for king, protected people in their region
Peasants - had to work on their lords land sometimes and then on others land to get money to pay rent, male peasants could be asked to fight
The king - defended country, passed laws and had power of chruch
Slaves - No freedom, worked for lord as farmer or servant, every aspect of their lives dictated
Influence of church

Anglo Saxons were very religious and it was a priests job to protect their souls. people prayed and didn't work on holy days
Monarchy and Gov
Earls- raise army, most powerful lords, enforced laws, collected taxes
Local Gov - controlled by earls and powerful landlords, earldoms split into shires
Witan - recommended who'd be next king, kings advisers, discussed threats, members chosen by king
people - paid taxes, obey laws, provide service and equipment for army
King - decided taxes, managed earls, head of gov, controlled mint, passed laws, defended church
Legal system
Policing
Tithing - every male over 12 had to join and were responsible for each others behaviour. 'Hue and Cry' signalled when there was a crime and the whole village would help find criminal
Trials
Jury in the hundred - jury would say whether a person was guilt or not
Trial by ordeal - Gob was judge and showed religious importance. E.g. some one would be injured and if they were healed by God they wouldn't be guilty
Punishments
Wergild - a fine paid to victim of crime. Fine amount depended on who and how you hurt someone.
Capital punishment - death penalty for betrayal of king or lord. Steeling from church meant you were fined and had your hands chopped off
Village life

Most villages a an Earls estate with large hall, stables, animals, chapel etc
Town Life
