- - - - There should be a system in place that while ensuring medical confidentiality for the individual gives Master access to this information in the event of a medical emergency.
        Details of this will be in the Safety Management System.
        
        A sealed envelope containing this information held securely by the Captain while person is onboard would ensure this.
        
        Envelope still sealed then returned to person when discharged from the vessel
- - - - The Master copies the list of crew into that section of the Official Logbook which then remains in use for as long as the "Articles" remain in force.
        
        When a ship is operating under the MLC with SEAs then the crew sign on a Crew List in a similar fashion and at the end of 6 months the Crew List is closed along with the OLB and delivered
        to the Proper Officer.
        
        The Articles, OLB and GMDSS logbook are delivered to the "Proper Officer" ie MCA when the Articles are closed and a new crew agreement is then opened with a new Official Logbook (OLB)
    - - Master must provide a copy of this on request to seafarer
      - Master may issue on joining copies of Drug & Alcohol Policy, Grievance Policy as a matter of routine however this is down to Master preference or Company requirements or policy.
    - - The approved notice clause can vary the period.
      - Running: Two or more voyages, 12 months duration but can be 6 months on short frequent voyages
      - Indefinite & Multi-Ship need special Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) approval
      - Voyage 24 months or first port of call
- - - - There is always the danger that such a seafarer may dispute the terms and conditions agreed to "over the phone" via an agency and if this cannot be resolved the seafarer cannot be compelled to sign a legally binding employment contract. This is a pitfall that must be accepted by the company should it occur.
      - This could have the potential to delay a ship sailing and perhaps Charter Party issues as it could leave the vessel under the Safe manning Certificate level and unable to sail.
