Czeiesler Background
De Coursey 1997
-Experiment they carried out on white tiled antelope ground squirrels
-Some of these had their SCN surgically destroyed in research to determine the role of the SCN in their health and survival
-After the lab based wheel running research, the ground squirrels were returned to their deer site of origin. They were monitored using a detector, a microchip transponder detector and video surveillance.
-Results found that squirrels that had a SCN destroyed were more active at night
-SCN destroyed squirrels made 16-52% of there food visits at night.
-More of the SCN destroyed squirrels dies at night 60%
Larks & Owls
-People can have one of 2 chronotypes
-Larks- Body temp and overtness will peak around mid afternoon
-Owls- peak hours later
-PRECHEN- context academic in children
-Two year groups given chronotype q's and standard cog tests
Biological Rhythms
-These control much of the body's normal functions including performance, behaviour, sleep encoding rhythms
Circadian Rhythms
-A cycle that tells our body when to sleep, rise, eat effected by environmental cues, likes sunlight and temp
-
-
-
Melatonin
-Absence of melatonin= waking up
-A hormone secretes by the pineal gland that inhabits melanin formation and is thought to be concerned with regulating the reproductive cycle
Schocats 'Sleep Gate'
-Found a close relationship between sleep propensity and melatonin. 6 p's spent 29 hours in a sleep lab where for 7 mins in every 20 mins they had to sleep.
-The highest sleep propensity was focused to occur in late evenings at the highest levels of melatonin proceed this by 100-200 mins
Shift lag
-Interruption of internal body clock that regulating sleeping patterns results in sleep deprivation
-Disrupts sleep; affects= sleep, wellbeing

-
Rechtschaffen 1995
-Procedure called disk over water method = 2 rats would be placed on either side of a 46cm disk that was over water
-Whenever one started to fall asleep they would speed it up causing them to wake up and walk, so they didn't fall in
-Requires control rat to keep walking
-Rats with SD would die within 2-3 weeks
-Can't generalise
Peter Tripp 1959
-Stayed awake for 201 hours
-He became aggressive 3 days in, began hallucinating that his shows were full of spiders. 5 days in his body temp declined
-Became depressed
Recht 1995
-Jet lag, shift work
-Investigates the impact of travel across time zones on baseball performances by studying the complete season records for the last 3 seasons available at the time of the research.
-Looked at records for the 19 north american league baseball teams based in city of eastern and pacific time zones and the conventional rule of thumb that jet lag requires a day or for each time zone.
-Collected data for the 2 games immediately before and after each trip made by the teams
